From Nursery Foundation to Finance Fundamentals
Lucy’s nursery journey started with her own children, and her positive (and negative) experiences with childcare. She wanted childcare to be fun, flexible and full of love – and so Little Angels (Uppingham) was born in 2010.
Following the Cardboard Box Approach, Lucy’s setting revolves ‘around the understanding that children are more interested in the box the gift arrives in’ than the gift itself. By sparking children’s imagination and excitement, they learn more, ‘problem solve, take risks [and] grow their minds’, and all starting with something as simple as a cardboard box.
A toy-free setting, Lucy’s learned firsthand the benefits of a pedagogical approach that’s focused on the children while still following the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum.
“Putting the children at the heart of [Little Angels] pedagogy, in the very essence of the planning of the physical environment, the sourcing of materials, resources and equipment, ensures that every child is excited to learn. Children feed into every aspect of the intent, implementation, and delivery of the quality of care and education.“
But, after 10 years of happy children, Lucy found the numbers weren’t adding up and she was struggling to pay her staff.
“2018 arrived, and I couldn’t pay my staff. It destroyed me […] so I decided to do whatever it took to become the person I needed to have a business that was proud and profitable”
Within two years Little Angels was back where Lucy had always wanted it to be, and then Covid hit the world. But Lucy was now in a position to help people, and having trained as a life coach six years prior, she had all the tools she needed to help others to not find themselves in her position back in 2018.
“I just thought if I could help one other nursery owner or manager save themselves from what I went through, then that would be really powerful.”
From that idea grew the Profitable Nursery Academy. A training academy and consulting service centred around nurseries and nursery management, led by Lucy Lewin offering coaching, training, mentoring, business planning and more.
